Version 2.0 (new):

Now use the a new VRChat feature to get images a lot easier. It works for anyone, even if they have a quest, or if they have untrusted URLs disabled.

How to use this asset:

  1. Import the Unity package and drag and drop one of the examples.
You could also use your own meshes, just use the base and attach the mesh underneath that game object.

  2. Open one of the textures for the version you've chosen and use it as a base to create your poster.

  3. Upload your image to one of the whitelisted hosts here: https://docs.vrchat.com/docs/image-loading
    1. I recommend github.com, since it allows you to update the image and keep the same URL. However, it has a bit of a learning curve to get started. If you've never used it, I'd recommend downloading their desktop app, since it makes the whole process way easier.
    2. Once uploaded, open the image in a new tab and copy that url. It has to start with "raw.githubusercontent.com"
  4. Copy-Paste the target URL into this field:

Version 1.0 (old):

It works by abusing the Video Player to download a video and display it on a mesh.
(Remind me when VRChat adds image downloading and I'll update the asset).

How to use this asset:

  1. Import the Unity package and drag and drop one of the examples.
You could also use your own meshes, just use the base and copy the setup

  2. Open one of the textures for the version you've chosen and use it as a base to create your poster.

  3. Convert your poster to an MP4
    I use https://onlineconvertfree.com/convert-format/png-to-mp4/
  4. Create a vimeo.com account and upload your MP4 on there.
You can use other hosts too. Vimeo happens to work for people who have untrusted URLs blocked. But only on PC, quest players still need to have enable untrusted URLs due to the missing resolver. More on that in the next step.
  5. Add the vimeo URL like below.
Notice how I use nextnex.com so it works on quest (you can use your own resolver for quest if you have one).
You can also add more backup URLs inside that list as fallbacks if you wish.

  6. If you want to update your poster, simply replace the vimeo video with a new file.
